Volunteers in Selby have raised more than £550 for Yorkshire Cancer Research as part of the charity’s Step Out for Yorkshire campaign.

Members of the charity’s Selby Volunteer Group took part in weekly walks around their local area to help raise funds for world-leading research in Yorkshire.

Kay Enion, Secretary of the volunteer group, said: “The committee really enjoyed their walks in May, and we managed to get mostly good weather.

“We all have someone in our lives who has been affected by cancer and this was a joyful way of remembering them.”

The Step Out for Yorkshire campaign encouraged people to run, walk or cycle during the month of May to help prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer in the region.

The Selby volunteers completed their walks around Brayton. The walks varied in length and route so the group could appreciate all their local area had to offer.

Other volunteers and friends got involved throughout the month by joining in the walks themselves, donating to the campaign and providing refreshments for the walkers.

Hilary Putman, a member of the group, said: “We usually finished for refreshments at a volunteer’s house, which was a lovely way to end each walk.

“We’re delighted with how the month went and couldn’t believe we raised so much.”

The Selby Volunteer Group was first formed in 1967, and since then they have raised more than £200,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
