A North Yorkshire couple have cycled from their home in Caperby in the Yorkshire Dales to Peterborough in support of Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Angie Morton and Rich Iveson completed the challenge in memory of their friend David Hartley, who passed away from cancer in 2020.

Angie said: “Dave was a true gentleman and a great friend, and we wanted to mark his life by raising funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research.”

Through sponsorship for the 280-mile bike ride, the pair raised more than £4,000 for life-saving research in Yorkshire.

Angie continued: “Dave was very likeable, and he had a lot of people who knew and loved him. That showed in the contributions we received from people in the local area. They knew what a great guy he was and wanted to donate in his memory.

“Everyone was behind us and thought it was a great cause. They gave not only in Dave’s memory but also because they wanted to support Yorkshire Cancer Research. Cancer is something that touches a lot of people and I think that’s why people were so supportive.”

Angie and Rich’s route took them through York, over the Humber Bridge, through the Lincolnshire Wolds to Horncastle and on to Kings Lynn. From there, they cycled to Peterborough before catching the train to Northallerton and cycling home. The route took them 5 days to complete.

Angie continued: “The challenge was quite intense, and it was hard going in parts, but it was also really enjoyable.

“We knew we wanted to do certain spots like the Humber Bridge, and made a vague route based around these locations. Then we had to make sure that we made it from one place to the next on time. You can never completely predict how things like this are going to go, but luckily it all went well.”

The money raised by Angie and Rich will help prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer in Yorkshire.
